Service Learning
Service Learning
It is my privilege to work with your children as the schools Service Learning teacher.
Service Learning balances formal instruction and direction with the opportunity to serve in the community in order to provide a progressive learning experience. Service Learning connects the traditional classroom experience with the real life lessons. The experiences offer students an opportunity to learn in and out of the classroom.
Students in my classes are involved in lessons about the environment, weather, recycling, natural resources, pollution, conservation, animals, insects, plants, nutrition, cultural events and holidays, food drives and bicycle and water safety.
Students work on horticulture projects throughout the school grounds. They are involved in amending the soil, spring and fall cleanups, planting specimens, removing weeds as they grow, composting, watering on a regular basis, pruning, staking and caging plants as they grow and harvesting crops. They will work together in cooperative groups and learn how to use a variety of tools properly and safely.
