Welcome to Ms. Jill's Art Class.
It brings me a lot joy to teach art at P.S. 104.
My goal is to develop an interest and ability for creative expression in my students. With each season and holiday my students take a journey discovering artistic traditions from cultures throughout the world and right here in New York.
This school year we started by drawing portraits of ourselves after reading the story “The Day You Begin” by Jaqueline Woodson. This story illuminates the power in each of us to face challenges with confidence. The beauty of art class is its ability to provide our students with a safe space to try new things and even make mistakes.
Currently we are working on drawings and paintings inspired by Ancient Egypt. This civilization existed for 3,000 years and is always fascinating to our students! We identified symbols and hieroglyphics and practiced writing our names in a new way. We handcrafted printmaking stamps out of foam paper and cardboard, dipped them in paint and made patterns on paper. There was a lot of excitement when we saw the results of hard work and perseverance.
In addition students have been learning about Amanda Gorman, the youngest presidential inaugural poet. After reading her book “Change Sings” students discussed how they have the power to make changes big and small in the world. In the story a young girl holding a guitar leads a cast of characters on a musical journey. We created colorful paper guitars that have a rainbow of shapes that appear to pour out them representing the positive difference that we can make.
These beautiful guitars line the hallways of the second and third floor.
I am excited for the upcoming spring projects and for the 2022 PS 104 ART SHOW!
